Spiritual Degrees of Brightness and the Law of Affinity

angel1Spirits see each other in varying degrees of brightness. The light a spirit detects is the reflection of spirituality and pureness which exists in the heart and body of a spirit. A spirit from the tenth level of heaven, Zabdiel, explains how the level of light within each spirit determines their place in the hierarchy of the spirit realm:

“As we stand on the earth plane, where I stand now, and look through the Veil of difference of condition which is between us and you in the earth life, we often see many people at one time, and sometimes but a few. These people differ in brightness according to the degree of holiness in each; that is, according to the degree in which each individual in himself is able to reflect the divine light of spirit which streams past and through us to you. Some appear very dim, and these, when they come over here, will go the regions dim or less according to their own dimness.”[1]

The process whereby souls are allocated to a certain region is called the Law of Affinity. The Law of Affinity is the great sifter, it is Saint Peter at the gate, determining who goes where. There are no AllanKardec-youngerquestions, no tests, and no debate, you are placed amongst those who are like you.

Allan Kardec, the Codifier of Spiritism, publishes the answer from a collection of spirits about how spirits congregate. He is told, “Union exists between all spirits, but in different degrees, according to the rank they occupy – that is to say, according to the degree of perfection they have acquired; and the greater their perfection, the more united they are.”[2]

GVOwenAllan Kardec, under the direction of the Spirit of Truth, brought the world Spiritism in the 1850’s. More than fifty years later, the Reverend G. Vale Owen communicated with a group of spirits, led by the spirit Zabdiel, the results of the sessions was documented in the book The Highlands of Heaven, which is part of a collection of four books, which are compiled in the book Life Beyond the Veil. The book was published in the 1920’s.

Chico Xavier

Chico Xavier

Next, Francisco (Chico) C. Xavier, starting in the 1930’s began psychographing messages and books from high spirits, all with the purpose of notifying the world about the Doctrine of Spiritism. Consistently, in literature published by Allan Kardec, G. Vale Owen, and Chico Xavier, the Law of Affinity is at the cornerstone of how spirits gather and are organized in the spirit realm.

Like Attracts Like

Zabdiel tells us how the Law of Affinity filters spirits and locates them with their brethren:

“So those whose radiance is great go into those spheres whose brightness agrees with their own; and every one into the sphere which agrees with his – be it less or more. But those whose bodies – spiritual bodies I mean – are of gross texture, and do not radiate much light, but are dim, go into those dim spheres where only they may be so much at ease that they may work out their own salvation. They are not at ease indeed in any sense of the word; but only they would be less at ease in a brighter sphere than in those dim regions until they have grown in brightness themselves.”[3]

After we separate from our physical bodies, we go to where we belong. The brighter travel to one of the levels of Heaven, the dimmer in one of the levels of the Lower Zone, and the darkest in The Abyss, or purgatory as it is known to many.

The degree of brightness that we reflect is determined by our internalizing the Love of God within us.NossaLar-city The more knowledgeable we are about the need to care, be fraternal, and honest with all fellow beings the greater our luminosity. As we grow in allowing love to permeate our entirety, the blemishes that we carry within us, such as envy and selfishness, become less pronounced; and solvable over time.

While those who are tied by material bonds to earth, who love possessions over people and see no wrong in fulfilling all of their desires at the expense of others are placed with their kin. They live in a world where others are similar to them, so they may see the true consequences of selfish behavior.

This is why it is important to work and study to increase your spirituality. To understand that we are on earth to learn to improve, to become better. As you ascend you will be granted the pleasure of being with others like you. With a group that cherishes and supports you. Allan Kardec explains how affiliated souls tend to stay with each other:

“These spirits happy at being together, seek out one another. Incarnation separates them only momentarily, because after their reentry into the errant state they meet again like friends who have returned from a journey. Frequently, they even follow one another into incarnation, wherein they are reunited in the same family or the same circle, working together for their mutual advancement.”[4]

The tight cluster of souls will watch out for each other. While some are incarnates on earth, others will look on from high and help guide the spirits going through their trials. Each helps everyone in the group to advance together. As they become purer, their friendship becomes more concrete, as their bodies divest themselves of matter. Petty jealousies and selfishness don’t disrupt their relationships.

The more you open your heart and mind to the Spirituality, the Supreme Intelligence, the more you shall be helped in your quest for improvement. Whatever effort you expend in denying yourself pleasures in this life in order to help others, you shall be repaid a hundredfold when you re-enter the Explore-Small-front-coverworld from whence you came, the spirit realm.

The Law of Affinity – How does it cause us to change our character for the better? This Divine Law places us with others who are like us. We live with those who share our good or bad characteristics. We soon learn that we prefer to be with those who treat us with respect and love. Hence, if we have treated others wrongly, we live with those who treat us the same as we have treated others – we soon learn the error of our ways. Click here to watch my YouTube video.

The Affinity of Spirits

afterdeath2In Spiritist literature, one of the Divine Laws is the Law of Affinity. It is revealed in The Spirits Book. The book was codified by Allan Kardec in the 1850’s. Allan Kardec didn’t write the book, he posed questions to high spirits. He employed multiple mediums throughout Europe to ask the same question, without knowledge of each other, and he only used the answer if the medium reported a similar answer as other mediums obtained.

One of the main drivers for the happiness of being a spirit in the levels of heaven is that you are with others who share your characteristics. The opposite is true of the Lower Zone or Umbral as it is called in Portuguese. Hence, the good are grouped with the good, loving, calm, serene, and caring while the souls who left their earthly bodies behind, but who couldn’t leave their earthly traits behind, such as envy, hatred, selfishness are also associated with their own kind.

The Law of Affinity is indirectly explained in multiple places in Kardec’s books, although I don’t recall seeing a succinct definition in one passage (those who may know of the correct location, please advise me). The passage which illustrates best the benefit of the Law of Affinity is the following:

980.  Is the sympathic link which unites spirits of the same order a source of felicity for them?

“The union of spirits who sympathize in the love of goodness is one of their highest enjoyments, for they have no fear of seeing that union disturbed by selfishness. In worlds altogether spiritual, they form families animated by the same sentiment, and this union constitutes the happiness of those worlds, as in your world you group yourselves into categories, and experience pleasure in being thus brought together. The pure and sincere affection felt by elevated spirits, and of which they are the object, is a source of felicity, for there are neither false friends nor hypocrites among them.”

Man enjoys the first-fruits of this felicity upon the earth when he meets with those with whom he can enter into cordial and noble union. In a life of greater purity than that of the earth, this felicity becomes ineffable and unbounded, because their inhabitants meet only with sympathetic souls whose affection will not be chilled by selfishness. For love is life; it is selfishness that kills.

When you are with true friends, their encouraging attitude and love increases your own feeling of contentment and functions as a generator to send your own feelings back to the group. Thereby, collectively creating a positive feedback loop, elevating the entire collective. Sounds like heaven? It is.

This is why Jesus said of the entrance to heaven, “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many,celestrial-city I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” (Luke 13:24) Only those who have left behind the baser emotions and the quest for material wealth shall be allowed.

This makes sense because how would the dynamics of a close-knit group change with a selfish, power-hungry addition who thought of the others as sheep waiting to be fleeced. The answer is that the group will quickly dissipate or dissolve into a rancorous mob instead of a force for positive achievement. Therefore, to join the club (enter that narrow door) you have to grow your spiritual side and discard your quest to dominate and take from others just to satisfy your personal desires.

Therefore, if after you discard your physical body and yearn to live in a comfortable, loving, and warm environment, then you must demonstrate your ability to contribute. The proof of your worth lies within the life you lead. Your life, unbeknownst to you, isn’t a series of happenstance and random events, but a carefully laid out plan, designed to educate and test you.

The Law of Affinity – The Enforcer of Good Behavior

gunfireThe spirits tell us that one could summarize the Doctrine of Spiritism as the Golden Rule. If you always follow the dictum, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, you have achieved the lion’s share of what the spirit realm, and Jesus himself, have been trying to teach us for the last two or three thousand years. The problem is the majority of people ask themselves, why should I follow the Golden Rule? It may make my conscience feel serene, for a moment or two, but it sure as heck doesn’t put food on the table. Ignoring it put lots of food on the proverbial table and other luxuries as well.

Everyone knows the fastest way to get rich is to take money from other people. Honest methods tend to be slow and sure, but nothing beats a dishonest or unscrupulous method for speeding up the process to drain capital from the hapless suckers into your own bucket. Sure, a pang of guilt may strike every now and then, but living the life of luxury more than makes up for the temporary discomfort.

The Law of Affinity is the answer. It provides the entire backstory, the complete process that controls your life on earth and in the spirit world. It remembers every deed, every slight, and every deceitful and insincere act that you have either thought of or committed. Somehow, I have no idea how; your baggage is tagged with your name on it. And the only way to relieve yourself of the paper trail of fines that are following you is to pay them.

The Law of Affinity is the enforcer. It tracks and categorizes your past actions and deposits you exactly where you belong. Oh the injustice! I am not sure about you, but I hate it when anyone says you get what you deserve. I always think that the other person should get theirs first and leave me alone long enough for my paperwork to get lost.

This Divine Law, this immutable law, associates us with others similar to us. In other words, togoldenrule reverse paraphrase the Golden Rule, we are done to what we have done to others. Hence, if we were criminals, we are put on earth with some of our accomplices, so we may collectively figure out the wisdom of accumulating enemies. If we were basically decent stock, we will be allowed to be raised and supported by others like us, thus helping us on our way to spiritual enlightenment.

There are many variations, a reprobate may be allotted to a good family, to give her or him a decent start in life, then will be presented with a harrowing set of trials to determine if she or he will make honorable free-will decisions. Or a decent fellow may be selected as the only son of a couple who robbed him of his rightful inheritance in a past life, so he may reclaim it when his parents die in a tragic accident. The bottom line, is that everything we did all comes back to us.

One may ask, if this is so how could we improve? Wouldn’t it be tougher in such difficult circumstances? Could a poor soul, who has much to learn, in the spirit world amongst ill-intentioned spirits or on earth in a mafia-like family, actually rise above the muck and modify his or her behavior? The answer is yes, it is possible, it is challenging but it can be done.

It is conceivable to improve in the worst of conditions because of the gift from God that we all have embedded within us. The gift of a conscience. Implanted in our spirit and in our physical brain is the entire set of Divine Laws and a detector when we violate one. When we start out as primitive beings, we gleefully ignore the warning bells and whistles. Gradually we notice that it is better to heed the signals we give ourselves than to ignore them.

As we accumulate experiences over thousands, if not tens of thousands of years, we build up a library of interpretations, so we may fully understand the nuances in every situation and select the truest course of action. At some point, for all of us have started from a deep hole we have dug ourselves by our intransigence; we grasp the concept that by following our inner detector a better life is possible. Explore-Small-front-coverFrom that humble beginning we commence the climb upward and outward.
