Moral Relativism – A Phase on the way to Spiritual Knowledge

moralrelativismThe abandonment of all moral absolutes and the rejection of any agreed upon modes of behavior is certainly disturbing for many. As a Spiritist my first reaction is to worry that our culture is actually moving farther away from the day when we recognize the importance of following the Golden Rule in all aspects of our daily life. Plus, our collective society seems to have lost the ability to think rationally.

In an essay on various subjects by Victor Davis Hanson, he gets around to reading about the decline of the West. He laments the state of affairs:

“In a word, relativism seems to have won. There are few standards left. Everything is negotiable, from the now fossilized idea of a traitor like Bergdahl to a neo-Confederate sanctuary city. A play, a movie, a building, a novel — anything really — cannot be assessed by absolute criteria, given that such “standards” are always set by oppressors of some sort, usually the children of capitalism and bourgeoisie consumerism who wish to enshrine their “privilege.” Take a sentence, chop it up into lines, and presto — a poem. By what standards is Chopin any more a genius than a Snoop Dogg? I thought of Walsh’s book yesterday when watching the various newscast reactions to the migration crisis in Europe and the deer-in-the-headlines faces of the European Eloi: Who are we to say that our culture is better than theirs? What is a border anyway? What even is a migrant? Whose values construct someone into the “Other”? Why do hosts enjoy privilege and guests do not?”[1]

As a case in point, I was talking to a young woman who was having problems with her spiritual life. I recommended that she read Allan Kardec’s The Book of Mediums, she answered why she should read another book by a dead white guy. I told her that her thinking doesn’t take into account that she may have been a white guy at some previous life and she may want to be careful about such prejudice.  Needless to say I haven’t heard from her since.

One can well imagine the schools where she matriculated. A constant bombardment of anger against persecution in a society which has never been more accepting seems to be the order of the day. Granted improvement is warranted, but there seems to be little or no recognition of what is right. The concept of honor in all dealings and truth has been discarded as an artificial construct created to control the oppressed. Again, the civility of many has been abused by those who have gamed the system for their own benefit, but that doesn’t remove the foundation of enlightenment built up over the centuries. This foundation of a rational scientific approach coupled with a sense of Noblesse Oblige was one of the major reasons why the spirit world began the entire Western Civilization. Starting with ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy, up to the present time we have been presented with an ever increasing standard of behavior.

Looking back across the ages, the world went from believing slavery was natural, for any race or creed that happened to have the bad luck to be captured, to slavery being universally abhorred. The same can be said for other practices, such as the use of torture to extract confessions to the impossibility of divorce between two unsuited souls. To many the pendulum has not only swung too far to the other side, it is completely off-track. Again Victor Davis Hanson tells us:

“And yet if one examines the schools and universities, Hollywood, the art world, what shows up on televisions and the news, whom the foundations are funding, what the clerks in government do — everything really from our monuments to poetry — it is hard not to confess that “we lost.”[2]

Spirals of History

All of this must be put in perspective. In Spiritist literature we are told that progress is an upward spiral: sometimes it seems to spin out of control and loses all that was gained. But that extreme statePersecutionofChristians2 is an illusion, out of the chaos and disorder emerges a newer and stronger structure. Since the Renaissance the entire planet has ridden the train of scientific advancement. Each step more breakthroughs occur, spawning technological advances and widening the gap from the spiritual focus of most of the world during the Dark Ages of Europe. Even as Islam maintained a degree of inquisitiveness during those centuries, their society as a whole was dominated by the religious class. The vast majority of humans at that time lived under the rule of despots and/or a priestly class, who exercised control over the large percentage of population which consisted of servants, slaves, and farmers.

Technology and aggressive empire building by Europeans disrupted this system. True, in theory one set of dictators replaced another, but they brought a forced blending of goods, knowledge, and culture. By the 19th century few in the world could escape exposure to a new domain of scientific and technological advancement. The old religious dominated order slowly crumbled.

Which it should have. What we are seeing today is the last rebellion against the intolerance built up by the powerful religious institutions around the world. These organizations focused their energy on insisting the populace serve them and only in the manner they determined. Any type of deviation, such as divorce, sexual preference, or even manner of dress was punished. Only Islam is still actively resisting liberation from dogma by the dynamic forces of the modern worldwide culture.

By scorching the earth of intolerance, the basic truths or universal love, charity, fraternity, and fair-dealing for all are seared; resulting in a fog of intolerance, splitting up into false classifications of past oppressors and current victims. Without the realization that all of us, cycle through various levels of authority, prestige, and poverty precisely to learn the lessons that we are all to be valued and respected.

A rebalancing is occurring. Old and true values will be rediscovered, once the analysis of a world built upon sand is complete. Already a new set of ill-intentioned people are taking advantage of being held to no standard. As much as all of us sometimes wish for a life of a hedonistic existence, at a critical juncture we realize the emptiness of that pursuit. Doing nothing for the good, not even know what good means is against our programming. Life in the spirit world has precluded the ability to effortlessly glide through life without merit. Only at a terrible cost to a body disharmonized by the repeated disregard of a conscience, that book of Divine Laws that is in every one of us, can one sit still a complete lifetime and ignore the lessons assigned to us by the Spirituality.

The pendulum will swing back eventually, on a different plane, following the upward spiral of history. A modified set of moral standards will be discovered. Ones that respect everyone individual preferences and all are treated with dignity. A set of codes, following the Divine Laws, will emerge. Materialism will be de-emphasized and spirituality will become treasured once again. The accumulation of items for no discernible purpose other than to feel good will be acknowledged as a passing folly, while those who rise above the fray by their dedication will be admired.

The details and timing of this event may be variable, but it shall come to pass. The earth is on a trajectory to be promoted from a world of atonement, where we are reincarnated to pay for our past wrongs and to learn valuable lessons to a world of regeneration, where hate, envy, conflict between nations are a thing of the past. Hence, when a target is established by our spirit superiors, it will happen. So sit back and watch events unfold. This stage of the battle has been in progress for centuries. Maneuvers are being organized as we speak. All of us are part of the great movement forward. As long as we all perform our small part of practicing the Golden Rule and rewarding that Explore-Small-front-coverbehaviors in others, the battle will be over soon (in spirit time, of course!).
