Sara A is an interesting case. She hit her head, after overdosing on different types of medications and woke up a changed woman. She remembered, via lucid dreams what she experienced while she was unconscious, but she didn’t have the usual all in NDE white light type of experience. Read More.
“When we come to earth, friend, we say one to another by the way that we are going into the land of mist and twilight, that we may, in the interior world which we find there, shed abroad somewhat of our light and warmth, For, indeed, that these be much needed we are able to sense, even in those far spheres from which we come. You may wonder by what process of chemistry or dynamics this is made possible to us; and, in detail. But we are able to give you a somewhat epitomized account of this affair, and so we will, if it would be of interest to you, and those who shall come to read what we give you.”

Like many others, I am extremely suspicious when I hear of religious healing. I think of naive people receiving faith healing with tragic consequences if they stop taking their medicine, or even worse, never see a doctor. Therefore, I wanted to visit a Spiritist healing center to determine their process and what they actually provide. Read More.
Throughout the ages people have reported messages from the spirit world, the “other side”, as the Druids called it. Are all of these communications just a manifestation of our collective imagination or is there something really out there? I believe there is and there is a growing mound of research that points in that direction. Read More.
I have noticed that whenever I saw pictures of Chico Xavier psychographing I saw him with his hand against his head. I thought that may have just been how he felt best when he communicated with spirits.
I read a passage in the book, Life Beyond the Veil, in The Lowlands of Heaven section. It was a communication to the Rev G. Vale Owen from his mother in the spirit world. His mother tells him the best method to hear her clearly in his mind. The bold words from G. Vale Owen: Read More.
On our Facebook group, Spiritism and the Spirit World Around Us (please join – by the way), a person posted a list of questions regarding mediumship. I thought the questions were great. They demonstrated a deep knowledge of the problems and concerns of starting out on the road to being a medium.
Here are the questions:
How does a contact between a medium and a spirit-being come about?
How do you prepare a mediumistic session?
How do you prepare the location of the mediumistic session?
What are the means you work with?
What are the possibilities you employ to reduce radio and TV frequencies?
How do you educate and instruct the medium?
What are the preparations the medium undergoes?
In what way do you help the medium with the preparations?
How do the participants of the session help the medium?
How does the person in charge of the session prepare himself/herself?
Does the person in charge help the medium with the preparations, and if so, in what way?
Does the medium consciously feel and experience his or her own energies?
Does the person in charge feel and experience his other own energies?
Is the same person in charge a medium?
What is the spiritist-scientific approach to self-knowledge in order to prepare a medium?
How does a medium get rid of the energies to which he or she is exposed on a daily basis?
How does a medium discharge his or her own energies, accumulated through behavior and, which hinder the mediumistic work?
How does a medium energetically prepare for the mediumistic session?
How does the person in charge energetically prepare for the mediumistic session?
How do the other participants prepare?
What is the difference between a mediumistic and a spiritist session?
What indications have your Spirit Guides given you in respect of these questions?
In the true spirit of Spiritism, instead of answering each one, and probably getting the answer incorrect, I will point out the various resources in which these questions (and more) are fully discussed and answered.
Plus, I would like to point out that in many of the Andre Luiz series of books, these types of inquires are touched upon.
The list of books one should read to explore the world of mediumship and to understand the spirit world on the other side of the line are:
1. The Book on Mediums – by Allan Kardec, available on Amazon and on PDF.
2. In the Domains of Mediumship – by Francisco C. Xavier, available on Amazon.
3. Disobession – by Francisco C. Xavier and Waldo Viera, available on Amazon and on PDF.
4. We are all Mediums – by Odilon Fernandes and Carlos Baccelli, available on Amazon and on PDF.
I was at a Medium’s meeting at the Seara Fraterna Spiritual Center in Rio de Janeiro, in July 2014.
It was a meeting to help discarnated spirits. The process is to help spirits living in a state of unbalance. This is not a type of medium meeting where spirits from deceased family members, etc are communicated with to ease the pain of still living family.
Andre Luiz dictated a book on how to conduct disobsession meetings. In the book he explains the exact process, roles, and training required to accomplish this great mission of mercy.
The meetings are all done by volunteers who mostly work during the day and then they meet at night to help our discarnated brothers and sisters, who need assistance to regain their facilities so they are able to get back on the path to improve themselves.
For those of you that have read Andre Luiz’s books, such as The Messengers or Workers of the Life Eternal, what I witnessed at the meeting followed the pattern of disobsession medium meetings in the books quite closely.
The meeting started with one of the persons saying a prayer to start the meeting. Next, the mediums talked about their experiences since the last meeting. After the previous information was digested, one of the mediums read passages from one of the Spiritist books. They kept their discussions and readings to a strict timetable.
At the appointed hour, the lights were dimmed and the mediums, heads bowed in silence, awaited the first contact. There were papers and pens ready at the table to receive any written messages. There are two types of mediums at the meeting. A trance medium, is the one the spirit connects with and speaks through their voice. The other type of medium is the counselor medium, who engages in conversation with the spirit.
A male trance medium started talking, all conversations were in Portuguese, in which I am not totally competent, therefore I may misrepresent some situations.
The trance medium started shaking and then he said, “Untie me! Untie me! Why am I restrained?”
A counselor medium came over to sit by the trance medium and put his hand on the trance medium’s arm and said,” Please calm down, calm down, everything will be fine.”
The spirit kept yelling to be free, finally the counselor medium told the spirit to go back to sleep and try to contact the group another day when he was able to communicate.
Another episode was when a women spirit talking through a female trance medium. Immediately she began complaining about her life in general.
“How could someone study, go to school, be educated, and wishing to be a good wife and yet spend a long time locked in her own house by her husband. And if that is not enough, her husband then marked her face with a red-hot iron. He burned all of my face.”
Then she cried and said she was sad. She seemed to believe her face was still disfigured, even thought she has left her physical body.
Next her husband possessed another trance medium and he said, “I feel very terrible I did this, but you know during those times the husband totally owned his wife.”
I immediately thought; this must be a couple from many years ago, when women had no rights.
The counselor medium told him, “I understand your regret.”
The husband responded, “Yes, you are right. All I want is her forgiveness. I am very regretful.”
This is a very tragic situation, the wife lives in constant anger of what was done to her and the husband can not move on due to his realization of his horrible behavior. Her absolute anger is understandable, but it reached a point that her negative thoughts are detrimental to her own health. Who knows how many decades both have been merely existing in this twilight zone. They seemed locked in the lower regions, unable to progress through forgiveness and love.
The last case I will try to summarize is a male spirit who came and told everyone at the meeting how hypocritical and stupid we all are. Then he said, “All of you are fools, you think you are superior to us?”
“No, we don’t think that, we just want to give you help and love”, the counselor medium replied.
“Who are you to give love. Only Jesus reached the high level of love, no one else.”, he said in a loud voice.
“We are here in empathy to learn, how about you?”, said the counselor medium, trying to find the key to start a constructive dialog.
He thought for a while and said, “Do you think we also don’t have empathy. I have love within my group”
“Are you happy with your life?” asked the medium.
“I accept my life the way it is.”, he replied
The counselor medium, sensing he was not open to any type of positive conversation, told him, “OK, so why are you here? If you don’t want to listen, then I will have to ask you to let others come.”
Then he laughed and left.
The meeting was like this for the entire two hours, short dialogs with spirits who required assistance. Some spirits, we were told, would come back many times. All spirits were directed to the meeting by spirits from the higher regions attempting to help those trapped by negative emotions or many other causes. Meetings such as these are just one way lost souls are comforted and guided to get back to the path of improvement.

In the book, In the Greater World, Andre Luiz was having a discussion about mediums who would say things that were probably from their own mind instead of the spirit who was communicating. Andre’s instructor explained why this could occur, through no fault of either party.
“Thousands of incarnate fellow spirits avoid practicing mediumship. They have become frightened and have retreated from the hurdles of mediumistic initiation because animism has turned into a Cerberus (a three-headed guard dog who guards the entrance to the nether world). What should have been serious and edifying instruction has turned into an oppressive system that obstructs candidates’ pathway to mediumship through the natural progression of learning and application. Absolute precision is required of them, and elementary lessons from nature are disregarded. Positioned in their castles of theories, many of those who get together for the lofty world of communication with our realm habitually turn down workers who would otherwise grow and perfect themselves over time and with effort. They demand pure communication devices, as if spiritual light were an ordinary light bulb. But just as trees do not sprout already producing fruit, any worthwhile faculty requires development. So, mediumship, too, has its evolution, field and course. Students can’t enroll in an upper level course until they demonstrate efficiency in preparatory courses through years of struggle, effort and discipline; hence our rightful concern about the animistic thesis, which purports to encapsulate all responsibility for spirit-related work in one single individuality; that of the mediumistic instrument. [In the Greater World, 2009, pp 126-127]
Therefore, give people who are learning a break. While I have no mediumistic ability, I can’t image how difficult it would be to discern between the voices in your mind and your own imagination. It’s hard enough for me to tell the difference between my fantasies and reality without extra voices in my head!
For those of you willing to embark on being a medium, the message is; don’t give up. Ignore the criticisms of armchair generals. It takes time and experience. The spirit world appreciates your effort.

Zabdiel in his communication with the Rev. G Vale Owen, on December 1, 1913, states the primary reason Jesus was sentenced to death by the ruling Jewish religious order was because He told the people that life wasn’t just on earth; our dusty plane was only a lowly way station … and those in charge of humans on earth were poor reflections of the governance of high spirits.
Zabdiel explains further:
“Throughout His teaching this is the one great motive, and for this it was that His enemies put Him to death. Had His Kingdom been of this world alone He had not discounted their temporal aspirations, nor their manner of life as to its ease and grandeur. But He showed that the Kingdom was of those higher realms, and that the Church on Earth, was but the vestibule to the Presence Chamber. This being so, then the virtues by which nobility should be measured were those which governed rank in these brighter regions, and not the mixed conditions of the lower portion of that Kingdom, as interpreted by the world.”
Being compared to decent, loving, caring, and honest souls residing in the spiritual realm was unacceptable to the rulers on earth. They knew that in comparison they would constantly fail. And this is still true today. The vast majority of regimes are built on corrupt edifices, who are mainly concerned with command and control of the population; not their welfare.
Zabdiel exhorts us to seek out higher spirits and learn about their loving presence. He tells us:
“Also, it is on our part a marvel that men should be found who hesitate on the way, and fear that to speak to us is a wrong, and displeasing to Him Who Himself came into the world for this same reason; that He might show how both spiritual and material were but two phases of one great Kingdom, and the unity of both together.”
Most religions today, the Catholic Church being one of them, attempt to dissuade their followers from direct contact with benevolent spirits. They seek to control knowledge and access. Religions which preach that talking to spirits are really talking to demons, have a point. There are many low and malevolent spirits wandering the earth which may fool the unwary.
The remedy is education on how to detect spirits with our best interests at heart to those that use us for amusement or worse. Spiritism was revealed to us to supplement our knowledge and take it out of the hands of secretive orders.
Allan Kardec wrote about how to discern the quality of spirits in one of the 1858 editions of his magazine, Spiritist Review. He wrote about a young medium who was fooled by a lessor spirit into performing nonsensical acts.
The United States Spiritist Council, published the entire editions of Kardec’s magazine for the year 1858 and it makes fascinating reading. The title of the book is, Spiritist Review – Journal of Psychological Studies – 1858, published in 2015. The link to the book on Amazon is here.
In the article about a young medium and how he was tricked, Allan Kardec lays out eight main points to remember when dealing with spirits. Each one is worth keeping in mind when dealing with the “Other World”.
“1. The spirits are not all equal nor in power, nor in knowledge or wisdom. As they are no more than human souls detached from their corporeal body, they present a variety even greater than that of people on Earth, because they come from all worlds and, among the globes. Earth is neither the most basic nor the most advanced. Thus, there are very superior spirits as there are very inferior ones; very good and bad; very wise and very ignorant; there are those of levity, malevolence, liars, astute, hypocrites, polished, sharp, jokers, etc.
2. We are incessantly surrounded by a cloud of spirits that occupy the space around us, despite the fact that we cannot see them, watching our acts, reading our thoughts, some to do us good, others to do us harm, whether good or bad spirits, accordingly.
3. From the physical and moral inferiority of our globe in the hierarchy of the worlds, the inferior spirits are more numerous here than the superior ones.
4. Among those spirits that surround us there are those that attach to us; that act more particularly over our thoughts, giving us advice, and whose influence we follow unnoticeably. Good for us if we hear the voice of good spirits only.
5. The inferior spirits only bond to those that listen to them, that give them access and to whom they connect. If successful on dominating someone, they identify with their own spirit, fascinating then, obsessing them, subjugating them, and leading then as one does to a child.
6. Obsession can never happen but by inferior spirits. The good spirits don’t produce any kind of coercion, combat the influence of the bad spirits and stay away when they are not listened to.
7. The degree of coercion and the nature of the effects it produces determine the difference between obsession, subjugation and fascination.
Obsession is the almost permanent action of a strange spirit that leads the person to be solicited by an incessant need to act by this way or the other and to do this or that.
Subjugation is a moral bond that paralyzes the free will of the one that suffers it, pushing the person to the most reckless attitudes, frequently most contrary to their own interest.
Fascination is a kind of illusion produced by the direct action of a strange spirit or by his cunning thoughts. Such as illusion produces an alteration in the comprehension of moral things, leading to misjudgment and to mistake evil for good.
8. Human beings can always disengage from the oppression of the imperfect spirits by their will power, by the choice between good and bad. If the coercion achieved the point of paralyzing the will and if the fascination is such that it obliterates reason, then the will of a third person may replace it.”
Therefore, for those in the process or just curious about communicating with the spirit world, one must be on guard and weary to whom you let into your house and mind. I recommend you find Spiritist centers where conditions are tightly controlled to communicate with spirits approved by higher spirits. There are never any charges for this service.
Zabdiel lets us know that until we gain a better communion with the spirit world, our progress remains difficult:
“For that they killed Him; and today there is remaining too much, as we see it, of their sentiment, both in the Church and in the world outside. And until men do realize us our presence, and our right of consideration as fellow-members of this same Kingdom of the Father, and not until this come to pass, shall men make much advance in the discerning between light and darkness.”
During the nineteenth, twentieth, and now the twenty-first centuries, there has been an increased activity in the spirit realm on our behalf. With the advent of Spiritism, in the 1850’s the seeds for the complete transformation of the earth have been planted. Zabdiel defines it as, “light being directed into the darkness.”
A plethora of new knowledge about the realm that put us here and guides our daily life is at our doorstep. It is up to each individual to determine whether it will be picked up and acted upon or not. All according to our free will.
